Silver U-Boat Front Clasp by Schwerin

A rare find a 1st Variation Kriegsmarine U-Boot-Frontspange in silver! The Navy U-Boat Front Clasp was instituted on May 15th 1944 by the Supreme Commander of the Kregsmarine Großadmiral Karl Dönitz. If you survived long enough to win a silver grade well you were one of the few lucky ones! It was awarded to recognize the constant tough efforts of the U-Boats and their brave tenacious and exemplary fights. It is constructed out die struck zinc base that has been bronzed washed and lacquer coated. The obverse depicts a U-Boat that is surrounded by a laurel leaf wreath that is tied together at the bottom with two crossed broad swords and is below a Kriegsmarine eagle (with outstretched wings clutching a swastika in its talons). To either side of the eagle/wreath is a six piece oak leaf and two piece acorn cluster. The full back reverse is marked: “Entwurf Peekhaus” (designer) and “Ausf. Schwerin Berlin 68” (maker mark). It also displays a flat wire tombak catch and steel pin. All of which are in well working condition. Nice detail remains. The silver wash remains in superb condition with background darkening!
